Top 4 things to see in Northern Greece

We went to Greece for our study trip. The study trip consisted of a few hotels, long bus rides and a lot of sightseeing. We are here to tell you about the top 4 attractions we have seen on our trip.

Vergina (Aigai)

Vergina is a small town in Northern Greece. The tombs of Philip the Second, father of Alexander the Great, lie there. Professor Andronikos discovered  the grave of Philip the Second and many other graves on 8 November 1977.

The museum of Aigai is where you can find them. They also display all the items they have discovered, like the armor, shields and wall paintings. They also show a short documentary about the history of the graves.

So if you’re near Vergina, you definitely need to visit the tombs. Which will cost 8 euros per person and they are from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00.

Meteora

The Meteora are huge rock pillars with orthodox monasteries and nunneries at the tops. The view is gorgeous and perfect for artsy pictures.

You might think these spectacular rock formations are volcanic plugs or hard igneous rock, but they are actually composed of sandstone and conglomerate.

The monks and nuns build their monasteries and nunneries here because they would be “closer to god”. The biggest monastery has 32 nuns and the smallest has 3 monks.

But before the monks and nuns got here, there were Hermits, they lived in caves in the rocks. They lived on their own. You can still see some wooden stairs in the rocks.

The White Tower

This tower is a monument and a museum on the waterfront of Thessaloniki. The tower was build in the 15th century to replace an old Byzantine fortification, later it was reconstructed by the Ottomans. The tower was used as a fort, a garrison and a prison. Because of the fame of the notorious prison they called it “Tower of Blood” or the “Red Tower”.

Mount Olympus

And last but not least: Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in greek and probably the most important place in ancient Greek. They said Olympus was the home of the 12 Olympian gods of the ancient Greek world.

This mountain is since 1938 a National Park, with over 1700 species of plants, 32 species of mammals, 108 species of birds and a vast number of reptiles, amphibians and butterflies
